Torre Toleda
also known as Torre Paternella (after the district where it is situated) or Torre Balata (due to its placement on a flat surface), derives its name from the viceroy of the period, Garzia Toledo.
Perched atop a stunning cliff overlooking the sea, the tower offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
Constructed by the Spanish between 1565 and 1588, Torre Toledo stands as a testament to 16th-century architecture and strategic military planning.
It served as a Deputation tower, playing a pivotal role in the island’s defensive system against barbarian and pirate raids.
Its strategic location allowed seamless communication with other towers, while its 1.30-meter-thick walls underscored its function as a watchtower for monitoring the sea and coastline.
Three dedicated guardians were stationed at the tower, tasked with overseeing the expansive sea cave known as “La Grottazza,” a hidden refuge for pirate ships in the past. Today, this cave is a captivating spot for swimming and exploration.
Regrettably, in 2013, part of the tower collapsed due to deterioration and abandonment. Only a portion of the southern facade and the side facing Terrasini remain standing.
Despite its partial ruin, Torre Toledo remains a must-visit destination. It is located at Via Toledo, Contrada Paternella.
